Think All Jewish Hebrew Schools Are Alike? Think Again!
An Innovative Interactive Approach to Jewish Learning
Remember going to Hebrew School and not knowing how to speak anything beyond your memorized Torah portion; or giving up soccer practice on Saturdays and coming away not really appreciating anything about Jewish culture? This year, Temple Beth Tikvah is offering a completely unique approach to change the vision of what Jewish religious education should look like in Orange County. Our program is known as Chavaya which means experience. From Preschool through 12th Grade children will be immersed in:
Learning and Living Jewish Values
Hebrew through Culture and Conversation
B’nai Mitzvah with Meaning
NFTY Teen Leadership Engagement
TBT believes that the synagogue is an extension of the family. Together, with your children and grandchildren you will engage in Shabbat, festivals, community and Torah in a whole new way. Renew your own Jewish connection as your children learn to appreciate their unique heritage.
Ulpan (Kindergarten to 12th Grade) meets on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 Ulpan is more than just Aleph and Bet. It is being immersed in Hebrew through language and conversation. When children learn Hebrew in the context of a second language, Jewish texts have meaning and Jewish ceremony understood. Hebrew fluency bonds our children with the land and people of Israel.
Chavaya (Kindergarden – 7th Grade) meets on Saturdays from 9am to 12pm Chavaya is a Hebrew word that literally translated means Experience. But at TBT it means more. Chavaya is where our children look at Jewish life in a way that leaves a lasting impression. It is one thing to talk about Hamentaschen, another to make them. Learning the words of our sages takes place through song, dance, and art. It is an experience that brings a feeling of joy to Judaism. Children absorb what it means to be Jewish.
NFTY Chavaya Temple Beth Tikvah is especially proud of our teen High School program. We are affiliated with NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth) with chapters nationwide. Our teens are empowered to pursue personal growth, learning, tikkun olam and connections with other Jewish youth in the greater Los Angeles area, all rooted in Reform Judaism. Courses of study include ethics, the American experience, Racism, Modern Israel and more.
NFTY Teen (Grades 7-8) Saturday mornings 9am-12pm, Jewish Leadership. This is a deep experiential learning into core Jewish values and bringing them to action, and community leadership. A part of this year is Madrichim training, which is the training to be a Madrich, a leader, in our Chavaya.
NFTY Teen (Grades 9-12) Temple Beth Tikvah is an active member of NFTY, a special program through the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY). It has offered thousands of young people the opportunity to explore and live Reform Judaism.
Youth Leadership Programs- Temple Beth Tikvah’s Youth Department offer exciting Jewish experiences in a social setting for kids from elementary through high school. Youth programs are a way for kids to build lasting friendships through engaging programs and activities from skiing to Shabbat sleepovers to Purim parties. Our youth participate in social action projects, celebrate holidays, spend Shabbat together, and have fun experiencing Judaism. By celebrating these important moments together we hope to further their connections to Judaism. All programs are led by caring, energetic staff.
Shabbatonim- Nothing compares to the experience of spending an entire Shabbat learning, socializing, and praying with your friends. Every Temple Beth Tikvah Shabbaton includes a lively Shabbat experience and the opportunity to meet new friends in the TBT community, but each one is also a little different. You might go on a scavenger hunt, have a snow day, or even learn how to juggle!
