COVID-19 Update

TBT OPERATING PRACTICES REGARDING COVID-19

FOR WORSHIP AND GATHERINGS

EFFECTIVE: DURING THE HIGH HOLY DAYS THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30

revised August 29, 2021

General Principles

  • These policies represent our best attempt to balance safety during the HHDs with the human need for personal interaction and spiritual connectedness to the synagogue, in accordance with scientific data, California regulations and CDC guidelines.
  • A protective environment is based on: vaccines, social distancing, air flow, and the correct use of quality masks. All get-togethers should seek to maximize these factors.
  • Each individual must decide on a personal basis if it is appropriate to physically be on the temple campus.  Every visit to TBT (or anywhere else) necessarily carries some increased risk of contracting COVID-19 compared to staying isolated.
  • Every individual should feel free to take additional precautions, such as wearing a mask and social distancing, even if not required to do so.
  • For those who choose to stay home, we will continue to stream services and as many events as possible.

Entrance to TBT’s Campus

    • All adults over the age of 18 must be vaccinated to enter the TBT campus (other than to drop off and pick up children, remaining outdoors, distanced, and masked at all times).
    • All adults must be prepared to show proof of vaccination – paper or digital.
  • A person MUST ABSOLUTELY NOT come to the temple if currently ill or experiencing any COVID-related symptoms.
  • A vaccinated person who has been in close contact with a person infected with COVID may come to Temple but should wear a mask indoors and socially distance outdoors.
  • An unvaccinated child who has been in close contact with a person infected with COVID  must first notify the Temple and be screened using the Orange County Health Department and CDC School Safety Measures for K-12 before entry.

COVID-19 Vaccinations

  • COVID -19 vaccines are highly effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19 virus,  severe disease, hospitalization and death. The vaccine is also effective at limiting the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, the Committee strongly recommends that everyone eligible get vaccinated.
  • All adults over the age of 18 must be vaccinated to enter the TBT campus (other than to drop off and pick up children, remaining outdoors, distanced, and masked at all times).
  • All adults must be prepared to show proof of vaccination – paper or digital.
  • A digital copy of proof of vaccination can be obtained at: https://myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov/
  • All TBT staff must be vaccinated unless they are medically disqualified and an accommodation of working remotely can be made.

Masks

  • The Committee recommends disposable surgical-style, or double-ply, tightly-woven cotton or linen masks, washed daily and worn properly. N-95 masks are the most effective but are in short supply.

Religious Services

Indoor Services:

  • Masks must be worn by all attendees at all times, in the sanctuary and throughout the building.
  • Chairs should be set up in two sections:  Vaccinated and “Family-friendly” (for unvaccinated children and their families). No space is required, but some is recommended, between attendees in the vaccinated section. In the “Family-friendly”  section, chairs should be set up in groups.  To the extent possible, unvaccinated family groups should remain 6 feet apart from each other. Also, at least 6 feet should be maintained between the two sections.
  • All doors and windows should remain open to the extent possible to provide maximum ventilation.
  • All performers must be fully vaccinated. The Rabbi and Cantorial Fellow can be without masks but it is recommended that all other performers wear masks. A 12 foot distance should be maintained to the audience. Some distancing of performers from each other is recommended.

Outdoor Services:

    • Masks must be worn by all attendees at all times while seated at an outdoor service.
    • Chairs should be set up in two sections:  Vaccinated and “Family-friendly” (for unvaccinated children and their families). • No masks and no social distancing are required by vaccinated people, though some social distancing is recommended.
  • The wearing of masks OR social distancing of at least 6 feet between unvaccinated family groups must continue through the event. Masks are not required if social distancing is maintained. Social distancing should be maintained while eating.
